STRAWBERRY FIELDS PRESENTS TAMIKREST, MOONTIDE ENSEMBLE, AMARU TRIBE, EVA J @ THE NIGHT CAT
Fri 28 October - Tix available here.
Mali blues outfit Tamikrest bring their smouldering combination of Tamasheq rebel music and desert rock for an unmissable night at the Night Cat.
Hailing from the Sahara Desert region of Mali in West Africa, globally-beloved rock collective Tamikrest are finally bringing their singular sound to Naarm/Melbourne for one night only. Fresh off their international tour and the success of their acclaimed latest album, Tamotait, the powerhouse trio will deliver a heady night of desert blues – delivered in their inimitable musical style.
Formed in Kidal with musicians from Mali, Niger, Algeria and France, Tamikrest drew on the rebel Ishumar Rock, or Tuareg Blues, while incorporating heavy American rock, reggae, world music and folk to create a sound that is both global and utterly unique – as the band put it, “A desert hosts us, a language unites us, a culture binds us.” Born of a homeland mired in political turbulence, their music speaks of a global yearning for peace. Tamikrest’s most recent album, Tamotait, is their most powerful since 2013’s widely acclaimed Chatma, a career-high opus that sees them deepening their atmospherics, recording with traditional Japanese musicians, and collaborating with acclaimed Moroccan singer Hindu Zahra.
Don’t miss this chance to experience one of the world’s most unique and powerful bands for the first time in Australia and for one night only.
After a stunning live performance at Strawberry Fields in March, Moontide returns to Naarm/Melbourne for his first performance in months with the fully-charged 4-piece live ensemble. The MOONTIDE Ensemble is an extension of the highly regarded project by Australian-based multi-instrumentalist Louis Tobin. Joining him to perform renditions of his music are Michael Ingram (Sax/Bass), Nicholas Payne (Percussion/Piano) & Miles de Carteret (Guitar/Bass/Percussion) all accomplished within their own projects.
Folktronic act comprising of music producer and singer/songwriter Oscar Jimenez (Colombia- Australia), Muralist and singer/songwriter Katherine Gailer (Colombia- Australia),and percussionist Cristian Saavedra (Chile- Australia).
The project is a playground to explore the intersection between cultures, traditional music from Latin America and new contemporary sounds; Vibrating charangos, urban flow, electronic & afro-latin beats, and powerful vocal harmonies create a portal that gives birth to an unknown genre they called “Cumbia Oceanica”.
Nominated for the 2020 Music Victoria Awards as Best Multicultural Act, they have captivated audiences at major festivals such as Womadelaide, Bluesfest, Queenscliff Festival plus international tours to the USA (SXSW), Colombia, Thailand, and Taiwan. Amaru Tribe are currently preparing the release of their 1st Vinyl LP (2nd full length album) together with a National tour in late 2021 and early 2022.
